Cloud Certification Roadmap
Certification ladders look confusing from the bottom because every provider publishes a wall of badges. The structure underneath is simple, and it is the same shape at every cloud: a foundation exam that tests vocabulary and concepts, an associate exam that tests hands-on engineering, and professional or specialty exams that test architecture and depth. Cloud Cert Notes is organised around that ladder.
The Google Cloud ladder
Google Cloud's ladder starts with the Cloud Digital Leader: no hands-on configuration, all concepts — what the products are, how pricing works, how security is shared between Google and the customer. The Associate Cloud Engineer sits in the middle: it assumes you can actually build and operate the environment the Digital Leader describes. Above it, the professional exams — Cloud Architect, Data Engineer, Cloud Developer, Cloud Security Engineer and others — each go deep on one discipline.
Our advice for most engineers is to skip nothing and rush nothing: CDL is a cheap, low-pressure way to learn the vocabulary (and this site's CDL section is written to make it a two-to-three-week project), ACE is the credential employers ask for by name, and a professional exam makes sense after a year or two of real project work.
How this site grows
Cloud Cert Notes launched with Google Cloud because that is the ladder our team is climbing and studying ourselves. The same ladder shape will organise the Azure section (Fundamentals, then Administrator), the AWS section (Cloud Practitioner, then Solutions Architect Associate), and later the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure and Alibaba Cloud sections, each opening only when its notes reach the depth of the Google Cloud coverage. Cross-cloud comparisons — which provider's service matches which — will be added as those sections open, since they are only trustworthy when both sides are properly covered.
Choosing your first certification
Pick the cloud your employer or target employers actually use; a certification's value is mostly local to a job market. If you are choosing freely, weigh three things: the free training and free-tier generosity while you learn, the number of associate-level roles advertised in your city, and whether the provider's documentation is good enough to self-study from — it is your textbook. Whichever ladder you choose, the study method in our ACE study plan transfers: exam guide first, notes second, hands-on always, quizzes to find the gaps. And remember that a certification is a door-opener, not a destination: the candidates who benefit most treat the exam as a structured way to learn a platform they then keep using, because the credential expires in a couple of years but the working knowledge compounds.
