ACE Study Plan and Exam Registration Guide
Registering for the exam
You register for the Associate Cloud Engineer exam through Google's certification website, which routes you to the exam provider to pick a date, a test centre or an online-proctored slot, and to pay the fee — listed as US$200 plus tax on Google's certification page at the time of writing; always confirm the current fee and format there before booking, because Google updates both. You will need a Google account, a government-issued photo ID whose name matches your registration exactly, and, for online proctoring, a quiet room and a computer that passes the provider's system checks.
Results arrive as a provisional pass or fail on screen at the end of the exam, with the official certificate following after Google's review. Certifications are valid for two years, after which you recertify by sitting the exam again.
A six-week study plan
The plan below assumes roughly an hour a day and uses this site's structure. Adjust the pace, not the order: later sections lean on earlier ones.
- Week 1 — Section 1: resource hierarchy, billing accounts, Cloud Identity, Cloud Shell and gcloud. Set up a free-tier project and follow along with every command in the notes.
- Week 2 — Section 2 (part 1): compute and storage planning. Compute Engine, Cloud Storage, Persistent Disk and Filestore, plus the pricing calculator.
- Week 3 — Section 2 (part 2): databases and networking. Cloud SQL, Spanner, Bigtable, Firestore, Memorystore, VPC design and load balancing. Take the Section 2 quiz.
- Week 4 — Section 3: deploying on GKE, Cloud Run, App Engine and Functions; Cloud Build and Artifact Registry; BigQuery, Pub/Sub and Dataflow in practice.
- Week 5 — Sections 4 and 5: logging, monitoring and audit logs; then IAM, service accounts, organisation policy, KMS and Secret Manager.
- Week 6 — Revision: retake all five section quizzes, reread every exam-traps list, and work the four comparison pages until each choice feels obvious.
Study habits that work
Read the official exam guide alongside the notes and tick off each bullet as you cover it — the guide is the contract the exam is written against. Use a real project: every service in these notes has a free tier or a low-cost way to try the core action, and commands you have typed are far easier to recall than commands you have only read. Finally, when a practice question catches you out, reread the whole notes page for that service rather than just the explanation; the exam will ask the same service from a different angle. On the day itself, arrive early, read every question twice — the constraint that decides the answer is often the last clause of the scenario — and flag rather than stall on any question that resists a first pass.
